The Mexican government, through the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), announced that within the framework of the New Mexican School (NEM) , the new National Baccalaureate System (SNB) will come into effect in September. Students will be awarded two certificates: the General Baccalaureate, which will allow students to continue their higher education; and the Technological Baccalaureate, which will issue a technical certificate endorsed by a public higher education institution.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that this represents a profound transformation of the country's high schools, which for the first time recognizes students and their context and seeks to ensure they continue their education upon completing secondary school.
"It's a profound transformation of high school, and it's for the good of young people. We want young people to stay in school, to love school. Instead of being on the streets at 15, we want them to love school, to have the opportunity to study. At the same time, enrollment is being expanded so that young people who graduate from high school have the immediate option of enrolling in the National Baccalaureate. So, that begins this September," he stated during the morning press conference, "Las mañaneras del pueblo" (The People's Morning Conference).
He explained that the new SNB means increased enrollment in upper secondary education, but it's also a new way of teaching that allows young people to have alternatives so they don't become involved with criminal groups.
The Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado Carrillo, recalled that the new SNB brings together the 32 Upper Secondary Education subsystems that existed in the past, in addition to also strengthening this educational level with the expansion of the coverage of high schools with 37,500 new spaces , for this, 150 expansion actions will be carried out, of which 88 are already in process this year: 20 new schools are being built, 33 are being expanded and 35 secondary schools are being converted so that they function as high schools in the afternoon shift.
The Undersecretary of Upper Secondary Education, Tania Rodríguez Mora, explained that this new system also offers two types of training for the first time:
A common curricular framework that provides comprehensive training in subjects such as: Language and Communication, Mathematical Thinking, Natural Sciences, Experimental Sciences and Technology, Digital Culture, Historical Awareness, Social Sciences, Philosophical Thought and Humanities, and English.
A work-related curriculum framework , which will be divided into two types: 1. Basic work-related competencies and 2. Extended work-related competencies, that is, there will be certifications for technical and technological careers.
Furthermore, within the framework of Plan Mexico, a new educational offering is planned based on the country's needs to boost the Development Hubs . To this end, new programs are being launched this year: Cybersecurity, Tourism Management and Innovation, International Trade and Customs, Artificial Intelligence, Electromobility; Robotics and Automation, and Semiconductors and Microelectronics. The following year's programs will include: E-commerce, Embedded Software Systems, Business Intelligence, Urban Planning and Sustainable Development, and Nanotechnology and Materials Science.
