MES director announces the results of the first evaluation session of the NCE

The success rate for the first assessment session of the National Certificate of Education (NCE) for the year 2020-2021 for the Republic of Mauritius is 71.6%. Among the 14,044 pupils who took exams in nine compulsory subjects, girls recorded a pass rate of 75.9%, compared with 67.1% for boys.

The director of the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES), Ms. DS Thanacoody Soborun, made the announcement today at the MES headquarters in Réduit.

She expressed her satisfaction with the overall performance of the candidates and pointed out that satisfactory performance was recorded in subjects such as English, French, and literature. However, she encouraged students to put more effort into certain subjects, especially math and science. The results of the NCEs, she added, will be used to determine the skills students have acquired, as well as to identify their academic strengths and weaknesses.

In addition, she highlighted that this year is a historic year since the Kreol Morisien was assessed for the first time at the level of Grade 9. The overall performance recorded, she observed, is very promising for this subject. , in particular in grammar, with a recorded success rate of 96.6%. M me Thanacoody Soborun also indicated that Gaetan Raynal State College recorded an outstanding performance in achieving a success rate of 100% to NCE exams.

In addition, she indicated that the students have shown great potential and, with the constant support of their teachers, their performance will continue to improve over the years. Regarding the Academies, she informed that 2,168 candidates have been admitted to 12 Academies. In total, 192 applicants registered a total of eight units, which is a commendable performance.

Regarding Rodrigues, she said that of the 950 students assessed, 52.1% obtained the level required to access Grade 10. Girls recorded a success rate of 59.6% and boys 45.4%, she added.

The director of the MES also stressed that following the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCE examinations took place under very specific conditions. She pointed out that the correction of the examination papers was also carried out in an unprecedented context. According to her, all the necessary measures have been taken so that the examinations as well as the correction take place in the best possible conditions in compliance with all health and precautionary measures.
