Cultivating Cultural Competencies: Honoring Filipino American History through Scholarship and Community Engagement

October 29, 2025

October 29, 2025|2:00 - 3:00 pm ET

In celebration of Filipino American History Month, the AANHPI Caucus proudly presents a webinar that highlights the importance of Filipino American history as a vital part of the American narrative. This session will open with an overview of key moments in Filipino American history, setting the stage for deeper exploration into current scholarly work.

The program will feature two distinguished scholars. Dr. James Zarsadiaz will share insights from his research on Asian American suburban communities in Los Angeles, shedding light on the diverse experiences and contributions of Filipino Americans in these spaces. The session will also include a conversation with Dr. Lily Ann Villaraza, focusing on the role of cultural competency in education and how it can inform more inclusive and effective practices—particularly in support of first-generation college students.

Join us as we celebrate heritage, engage in critical dialogue, and challenge academia to more fully integrate Filipino American experiences into its curricula and practice.
